Extraction

Using the most technologically advanced equipment, the extraction works are carried out in all our quarries.

These are open-pit quarries and subway mines, such as Fraguiña, one of the largest in the world, as well as Fontelas.

Slate quarrying began in 1968 in open pit. With the continuous technological improvements in the production processes, in 1990 subway extraction began, thus allowing an optimal use of the deposit.

One of our quarries, with the Valdemiguel denomination, located in the Valdeorras region, began its activity in 1970. Other quarries of our group are: La Ponderosa, Castrelos and La Baña.

A fully automated extraction facilitates the work of the worker while ensuring an optimal treatment of the stone.

Sawing & Splitting

Once the slate blocks arrive at the processing plant, they are subjected to a rigorous quality control, observing the characteristics of each one of them and selecting the most optimal stone for each market.

Sawing

The modern sawing plants are mechanically controlled. They saw handy small blocks from the large blocks. Depending on which capstone format is produced, the block is given a different size and shape in order to keep the degree of output as high as possible.

Splitting

Depending on the final market of the slate, the tiller will proceed to an exfoliation of the traditional thickness of each country. This is an additional quality control, since the tiller, a specialist in his work, selects the most valid pieces.

Trimming

The finishing of our slate pieces is automatic, adapting it to the desired type of roofing. This automated finishing guarantees the homogeneity of the pieces, so we can speak of uniform “templates”.

Sorting & Packing

Once the slate pieces are finished, they are subjected to a rigorous quality control, by means of observation including sound control of each piece. Only then the slate is packaged.

Quality & Logistics

Quality

The control is continuous throughout the production process, yet we perform random and daily checks by our quality control department technicians, which ensures that only the best slates reach our most demanding customers.
